First appearance - unnamed

Batman & Son (1987)
Damian originally appeared as an unnamed infant in the 1987 story Son of the Demon, which was then never mentioned within continuity. Following this, various alternate universe stories dealt with the course of the character's life, giving him varying names. In 2006, the character was reinterpreted as Damian Wayne by Grant Morrison, and reintroduced into the main continuity in Batman #655, the first issue of the Batman & Son story arc.

Grant Morrison

When asked by about the canonicity of Son of the Demon, Grant Morrison responded:

"For a long time, [DC] said [Son of the Demon] was out of continuity. Now it's just kind of out of continuity. I didn't actually read it before I started writing this. I messed up a lot of details, like Batman wasn't drugged when he was having sex with Talia and it didn't take place in the desert. I was relying on shaky memories. But now we have this new "Superboy punch" continuity [after Superboy Prime attacked the fabric of the universe during Infinite Crisis]. People still don't realize how important that single punch was to cover everyone's ass."

In Batman and Son (2006, see timeline), Damian steals Jason’s Robin tunic that is hanging in his memorial case and nearly kills Tim Drake as he vows to take his rightful place by his biological father’s side.  He leaves Tim lying on the ground with the shorts from Jason’s Robin suit.

First appearance as Robin

Damian appears as Robin for the first time in Batman & Robin #1 (August 2009).

He stars alongside Dick Grayson, who is 'filling in' for Batman during his absence (read on from Batman: R.I.P., see timeline).
